Global Mental Health Crisis: Over 1 Billion Affected | NuroSpark

Global Mental Health Crisis: What the Latest WHO Reports Reveal

  • Over 1 billion people worldwide are now living with mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. World Health Organization
  • These conditions are the second biggest cause of long-term disability globally, affecting people of all ages and incomes. World Health Organization
  • Suicide claimed approximately 727,000 lives in 2021, making it one of the top causes of death among young people. World Health Organization
  • Economically, depression and anxiety cost the world about US$1 trillion per year in lost productivity and health care. World Health Organization
  • Despite some progress, governments still allocate only about 2% of their health budgets to mental health – a number that hasn't changed since 2017. World Health Organization
  • There are just 13 mental health workers per 100,000 people on average globally, and many low-income countries remain severely under-served. World Health Organization

The Psychology & Counselling Imperative

  • We need more counsellors, psychologists, social workers to meet the demand.
  • Services must shift from large psychiatric hospitals to community-based, person-centred care.
  • Telehealth, school counselling programs, early childhood mental health work, and policies protecting people’s rights are no longer optional — they are essential.

NuroSpark’s Way Forward

  • At NuroSpark, we believe in action. Here’s how we plan to contribute:
  • Scaling counselling services — making emotionally safe spaces accessible online & in smaller communities.
  • Training more mental health professionals with practical, hands-on learning to close the workforce gap.
  • Integrating mental health into everyday life — with workshops in schools, workplaces, and community centres.
  • Advocacy and awareness — pushing for policy reform, more funding, and destigmatizing mental health via education and storytelling.
  • Together, with awareness + action + real resources, we can hope for a future where mental health care is a basic right, not a luxury. 🌱
